Tips For Buying Refurbished

Posted by Maria Walker on Jul 12th 2021

There are two primary reasons to buy refurbished technology, it is lighter on your wallet and better for the environment. However, we understand that it can be intimidating to start searching for the perfect refurbished product. Lucky for you, we’ve got you covered.

What are refurbished products?

Refurbished or renewed products are not new. These devices most likely had a previous owner and were returned after the owner upgraded. They typically come in various cosmetic conditions which is a fancy way of saying they show different levels of previous use. We receive all of our products from Apple approved vendors. Once they arrive we clean, test, and sort them into three different cosmetic categories. One of the first things you should look for when purchasing refurbished is what condition it is in.

What condition is it in?

There is no official definition of refurbished. Each company will have their own specifications for what condition the device is in when it is sold. When shopping with us, we have our products divided into three simple cosmetic categories or grades for your convenience:

  • Excellent (A Grade) - This indicates that there may be one or two scratches on the screen that are not visible while the phone is powered on with some minor dings or scratches on the corners and casing. We’d rate this phone an 8 or a 9 with a 10 being a brand new phone
  • Very Good (B Grade) - There may be a few (less than 4) light scratches on the screen that are not visible when the product is powered on with another heavy scratch that is less than ½ an inch long. Usually has minor dings on the corners and light scratches on the casing. Think of this one as a 7 out of 10.
  • Good (C Grade) - This will have multiple scratches on the screen from normal use with dings on the corners and scratches on the cases. There also may be some chips or nicks on the screen. There are no cracked screens. We rate this one a 5 or 6 out of 10.

It’s important to consider if the cosmetic condition of the device would be a deal breaker for you. Typically the lower the grade, the lower the price, however, if you’re looking for something close to new we recommend choosing the Excellent (A Grade) condition.

Who did the refurbishment?

The next thing to consider when buying a refurbished electronic is who did the refurbishment. Our devices go through a rigorous multi-point inspection by the TekReplay team. Our receiving team takes all our new inventory to our in-house diagnostics lab to be tested and cleaned for purchase. If any component of the device fails testing it is replaced by our repairs department. When purchasing refurbished products you always want to ensure that the company you’re buying from is taking all the steps necessary to provide you with the best product possible.

Does it come with accessories?

Always be sure to pay attention to which accessories your refurbished device comes with. We provide chargers with most of our purchases, however, some other places do not provide any accessories. We highly recommend reading all of the listing details to ensure which accessories are included or not. This is definitely something to keep note of when shopping refurbished.

Does the device come with a warranty and what is the return policy?

These two steps are often overlooked when purchasing online. We highly recommend ensuring that your refurbished device comes with a warranty and confirming the details of the return policy. When you purchase directly from TekReplay.com we provide a 1-Year warranty that covers manufacturer defects, which means any issue with your device that we didn’t catch during our testing. We also provide a 30 day return for refund. If something goes wrong we’ve got your back. Find out more about our warranty and refund policy on our website!

Now that you know all the best steps to take when purchasing a refurbished device, go forth with confidence and shop. Hopefully with us, at TekReplay.com, because we’d be sad if you didn’t and at this point think of all we’ve been through together.
